Paper highlights

An NK landscape maps a configuration of choices onto a measure of performance. Researchers use it to study how firms search when choices interact—for example, when changing a product’s battery also changes the value of its processor and screen. This technical note makes the construction of that landscape explicit.

The main clarification is that an NK landscape is not simply a three-dimensional picture of hills and valleys. It is a high-dimensional function built from component-level contribution tables. The familiar surface is only a visual metaphor.

How the landscape is constructed

When K is zero, each choice contributes independently and local improvement can lead to the best configuration. As K rises, changing one choice affects more contributions. Neighboring configurations then have less similar performance, the landscape becomes more rugged, and local search is more likely to stop at a peak that is not the global best.

Why the note matters

The note is a reference for building, teaching, reviewing, and replicating NK models, including what familiar landscape pictures do and do not show.

What to watch for

Readers should inspect both the landscape and the search process placed on it.

Careful claim

The note explains the mechanics of NK landscapes; substantive implications depend on the interaction structure, contribution functions, observability assumptions, and search process chosen by the modeler.

Abstract

The NK landscape methodology has been used by much research in strategy and organizations, and the concept of “landscape” has become a popular business idea. Despite such popularity, exactly what NK landscapes are and how they work is typically obscure to all but a small specialist audience. This technical note clarifies the NK landscape methodology by explaining how an NK landscape is computed. This note also discusses ways in which NK landscapes are represented and used in research. The aim of this note is enabling more researchers to engage more deeply with the work that relies on the landscape concept.
